Though Baldwin and Forshaw are top Boatfamily names, I'm afraid I can see no canal link in the people you mention.
Sorry, but good luck with your research - Keith Jenkins, ODFHS Boatfamilies researcher

  A reply for Paul Ashcraft:

Thanks for letting us know that you’ll be visiting Ormskirk; I’m sure that we’ll be able to sort something out, given that you have given us a few weeks notice.

I’m not sure whether or not you have already contacted ODFHS directly, but (if not) please do feel free to e-mail the address at the top of this page (or contact us on Facebook, if you use that site) with any information that you think might help. It is possible that we might have some information in our Research Library that could help you.

I'm going to be visiting Ormskirk in May from the USA--I wanted to meet with someone regarding trying to track the "Ascroft" family history prior to the Revolution.

For Pauline Inglis re. Thomas Aspinwall, of the Eureka Hotel.

I can’t find a baptism for Thomas ASPINWALL, but there is one that ties in with his given birthdate for a Thomas RUFFLEY on the Lancashire Online Parish Clerks website. It suggests that Thomas (son of William RUFFLEY and Alice of Aughton) was baptised at St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, Aughton.

There is also a wedding between William RUFFLEY of Ormskirk parish and Alice AUSTIN of Aughton at Ormskirk on 7 May 1787; following the marriage they had Mary (1788), Margaret (1793), William (1793), Jane (1796), Edmund (1800), Ann (1803), Ellen (1808) and Thomas (1810).

It seems as though the family were definitely using the surname ROUGHLEY or RUFFLEY between the 1780s and 1810s, but I’m not sure where the ASPINWALL would have come from; there are quite a few of them around Aughton/Lydiate, though, so it could be worth looking at the ROUGHLEY line to see where that takes you.

I believe that, at one point, Thomas’ brother William did live on the corner of Town Green Lane and Prescot Road in Aughton.

Hi I'm looking for information re my 3xgrt grandfather Thomas Aspinwall.

He was married to Catherine Woosey of Burscough and he ran the Eureka Pub in Halsall Lane for many years. His second wife was Catherine Quirk who also happened to be the half sister of Thomas's daughter-in-law, Elena.

I have a photo of his headstone which gives the dates of birth 01/07/1810 and death 30/12/1894, but I have not been able to find any actual record of his birth or baptism. His father was William Aspinwall (aka Roughley) and his mother was Alice (surname unknown).
William ran The Three Crowns Inn, Ormskirk, and The Scarisbrick Arms, Downholland. William's brother, John Aspinwall, lived at Westhead in a house called Mughouses.

Does anyone have any further information about Thomas and his parents, particularly his birth date and mother's maiden name.
Thanks

  Message for Gill Dowling.
First, with any Lawson, he is probably related to people on our boatfamilies website (link on the left of the odfhs wesite. Also, Richard Houghton of the Lathom & Burscough Military History site (lbmhs.co.uk) is a MINE of information on any 1stWW deaths anywhere around Ormskirk.
