Woosey/Davenport Family – and some origins of South American football

club penarol logo

Recently the society was contacted by Alvaro Cabrera, a journalist in Montevideo, Uruguay, seeking information about Arthur William Davenport, who emigrated from Ormskirk to Montevideo in about 1888 (aged 21) as a railway worker, where he helped to found a workers’ sports club (CURCC) that became Club Atlético Peñarol, now one of the leading football clubs in Uruguay.

Society members may see the full details by logging in to the Library Resources section of the Members area. Meanwhile, here are some snippets of this intriguing story, as compiled by our membership secretary, Keith Broadbent, in collaboration with Alvaro Cabrera.

Arthur Davenport married his first wife, Charlotte Isabel (Nina) van Domselaar in the mid-1890s. They had three children, Theodore (b 1897), Edith (b 1899) and Joyce (b 1906). The family photograph left, is of Arthur with these three children in Montevideo in 1921. Nina Davenport had died of breast cancer in 1912.

Arthur Davenport married again in 1915, in Montevideo, to Norah Georgina Paterson. They later returned to the UK -  here photographed at a wedding in 1947.
